We are seeing them everywhere: bioclimatic pergolas are here to stay, so it’s worth it to get acquainted with them and make the most out of their use
They are showing up in every garden and terrace, and we’ll keep seeing them around. Bioclimatic pergolas have proved themselves to be a versatile and affordable solution to make outside spaces habitable all year round without wasting huge amounts of energy on air-conditioning nor needing big renovation budgets to be installed. But, what is exactly a bioclimatic pergola, and what differentiates it from a conventional pergola?
The key is in the adjective: “bioclimatic” means that something -usually an architectonic or constructive element- uses natural resources to its advantage with the goal of reducing energy use and increasing the thermal comfort of its users through passive design and environmental adaptation. A bioclimatic pergola hence has mobile elements that allow to max out the aforementioned advantage over the natural resources at its disposal.
What is a bioclimatic pergola?
A bioclimatic pergola is an outdoors structural element sustained by columns that creates shadow and has a cover that can adapt to the climatic conditions at any given moment to use natural resources in favor of reducing energy use and favoring thermal comfort.
To carry out that adaptation, the cover of a bioclimatic pergola is mobile. This means that the cover or roof is made of stripes, sheets or plates whose orientation can be autonomously altered by the user. This feature allows to regulate the flow of air, light and humidity, thus altering the climatic conditions both inside the pergola and inside whatever room it is installed next to, if it is installed right next to a building.

How do bioclimatic pergolas work?
Glaxior’s bioclimatic pergolas work through a motorized system that is controlled by remote. The users can choose the orientation and openness of the cover plates, allowing a bigger or smaller light flow through and controlling the ventilation at all times. Besides, our model has an optional sensor that detects humidity and closes the system automatically when it rains.
But, isn’t the system sustained by columns? Does the orientation of the cover make any kind of difference since it is a structure with no walls? The answer is yes, because Galxior’s bioclimatic pergolas are compatible with other glazing and closing structures, like our glass curtain walls, and other textile screens that offer protection against the wind, insects, or simply offer discretion.
Besides being able to close off -if not completely- the space our pergolas cover, we’ve designed a model that oferrs the final clients full control over artificial lighting, drainage and the even sound system, which can be addiotionally installed within the system itself.

Make the most of outside without giving up the outdoors
We’ve talked about how out glazing systems gain the space they shelter from the wind, the rain and extreme temperatures before. But there is a climate factor that glass itself cannot contain, and that is the sun.
In many places of our country, like Valencia or Malaga, we get over 2500 and 3000 hours of sun a year. That is over 300 days: we get direct sunlight on us for more that 80% of the year. And while that makes of our country a coveted tourist destination and makes us headliners in quality of life, we know that the climatice crisis impact on the Mediterranean basin makes protecting ourselves from solar radiation a non-negotiable. Installing a bioclimatic pergola offers that necessary protection but keeps intact everything that we like about being outdoors: contact with nature and access to open air, whenever climatic conditions allow to safely enjoy it.
Our bioclimatic pergolas adapt to any and all spaces, and can be autonomous and easily installed. Thanks to our ground-breaking system, the independent installers can make all the specifics modification that each module needs without compromising the integrity of the system. Besides, our pergolas have a patented safety designed to guarantee the safety of installers and users at all times.
